CrawlPact vs MaxAEO: Crawler Policy vs AI Answer Visibility

CrawlPact audits what your site declares to AI crawlers; MaxAEO tracks how your brand is mentioned and cited in AI answers. Two different measurements.

By CrawlPactPublished Facts verified

Short answer

CrawlPact and MaxAEO measure two different things, and confusing them is the most common mistake in this space. CrawlPact audits what a website publicly declares about crawler access. MaxAEO monitors how a brand shows up in answers generated by AI platforms: whether it is mentioned, where it is recommended, how it is described, and which sources are cited, across prompts you choose.

Choose CrawlPact if your question is “according to the policy we published, which AI crawlers may access our site, and are our signals consistent?” Choose MaxAEO if it is “when buyers ask AI systems about our category, do we appear, how are we framed, and who gets cited?” Use both when you want technical crawler-policy hygiene and downstream visibility measured side by side — without pretending that one causes the other.

Diagram of two separate pathways: a website's crawler-policy declarations feed CrawlPact's audit, while buyer prompts sent to AI answer engines produce answers whose brand mentions and citations feed an AI visibility monitor. The pathways are labelled as different measurements with no arrow of cause between them.

What CrawlPact solves

CrawlPact addresses a governance problem. Sites now publish many crawler-related declarations — robots.txt groups for a dozen AI tokens, meta and header directives, llms.txt, RSL — and those declarations can be incomplete, contradictory or silently changed by a deployment. CrawlPact evaluates the public evidence and reports, per documented crawler, whether the declared outcome is allowed, blocked or unspecified, with the rule that decided it.

The result is not a visibility score. CrawlPact never asks ChatGPT or Gemini about your brand, and it does not claim that allowing a crawler will put you in an answer. Its scope is narrower and more checkable: show what the website declared.

What MaxAEO solves

MaxAEO describes itself as an “AI search brand visibility monitoring and optimization platform”. You define a brand, competitors and a set of monitoring prompts — the questions real buyers might ask — and MaxAEO runs them daily against eight platforms: ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude, Copilot, Grok, Google AI Mode and Google AI Overviews. It reports mention rate, competitive rank, sentiment for each answer, the sources each engine cited, and content recommendations, and it can replay the exact answers it recorded. No tracking code goes on your site; the data comes from the answers themselves.

That is a marketing and discovery measurement layer — a GEO/AEO workflow, in the vendor’s own terms.

Crawler access and AI visibility are different metrics

This distinction is the reason the page exists.

  • A crawler can be allowed and the brand can still be absent from answers.
  • A brand can appear in answers because a system drew on third-party sources, prior training data or a search index — not on the brand’s own site.
  • A restrictive policy can reduce access for one documented crawler without determining what any AI product knows about the brand.

So a crawler-policy result should never be read as an AI visibility score, and an AI visibility dashboard is not evidence that a site’s crawler policy is technically correct.

Where they overlap

The overlap is an investigation workflow, not a feature. A marketing team spots weak or inaccurate AI visibility and asks whether important pages are reachable and clearly described. CrawlPact can verify one technical layer of that question — what the public crawler policy says, separately for search, training and user-triggered crawlers. MaxAEO measures the answer environment. They observe different evidence in the same discovery system.

Key differences

Policy in, answers out

CrawlPact starts from the website; MaxAEO starts from prompts and the responses AI platforms return. That one difference drives the rest: data model, workflow, users and what counts as success.

Technical governance versus marketing intelligence

A CrawlPact user is typically a developer, publisher, agency or web-operations team keeping policy correct across domains. A MaxAEO user is typically managing brand discoverability, prompt coverage, share of voice and content. Both roles can sit in one company; they should not share one blended score.

Platform coverage is a moving list

MaxAEO’s published list names eight platforms today. AI products launch, merge and change quickly, so treat that list as dated to the verification date on this page rather than permanent.

Neither installs a tracking tag — but they collect different data

CrawlPact fetches public policy resources; MaxAEO runs prompts against AI platforms. Both can start without touching your site, and the data they produce has nothing in common.

Timing is not causation

If you change robots.txt and a visibility metric moves a week later, the timing proves nothing. AI answers shift with prompt wording, model updates, retrieval changes, new sources and competitors’ activity. Keep the two measurements separate so you can investigate a relationship without inventing one.

What MaxAEO does that CrawlPact does not

  • Measures brand presence in AI answers — mention rate and recommendation position for chosen prompts.
  • Benchmarks competitors in those answers and classifies sentiment.
  • Traces citations — which sites and articles AI engines cite when they answer.
  • Suggests content work aimed at changing what AI engines recommend.

CrawlPact does none of this, by design. It is not a GEO or AEO tool.

Choose CrawlPact when…

  • You need to audit crawler access declarations and the public signals around them.
  • You want evidence of which rule or response produced each finding.
  • You want to catch policy drift across domains or deployments.
  • You need search, training and user-triggered crawler purposes separated before changing access rules.
  • You want a vendor-neutral policy check, not brand-visibility reporting.

Choose MaxAEO when…

  • You need to know whether your brand is mentioned or recommended in AI-generated answers.
  • You want prompt-level monitoring across several AI platforms.
  • You need competitor benchmarking, sentiment or citation-source analysis.
  • You run an ongoing GEO/AEO programme based on observed answers.
  • Your question is brand discoverability rather than crawler-policy correctness.

Use both when…

A mature AI-discovery programme can keep the technical layer intentional with CrawlPact and watch the downstream effect with MaxAEO. When MaxAEO exposes a visibility gap, CrawlPact rules one technical factor in or out: whether the site’s public declarations match the intended access strategy — for example, that search-purpose crawlers are not blocked by a rule meant for training crawlers. That does not prove causation, but it stops a team optimizing content while a basic policy mistake sits underneath.

Important limitations

  • CrawlPact does not measure AI brand mentions, prompt rankings, citations, sentiment or share of voice.
  • MaxAEO’s results reflect the prompts, platforms and timing it runs; AI answers are dynamic.
  • Neither product can guarantee that a particular change will make an AI system recommend a brand.
  • Do not use CrawlPact findings as a proxy for GEO/AEO performance, or AI visibility metrics as proof of crawler-policy correctness.
  • MaxAEO’s features and platform list were verified against its official pages on the date shown.

Check what your website declares before you change enforcement

A CrawlPact audit reads the public crawler-policy signals your site serves and reports what they declare to each documented AI crawler, with the evidence behind every finding. It does not block traffic, measure visits or guarantee crawler compliance.

CrawlPact uses optional Google Analytics and Microsoft Clarity on public pages to learn which content is useful. Clarity records clicks and scrolling (session replay), with anything you type masked. Neither runs in the app or admin areas, and CrawlPact works the same whether you accept or decline. See the privacy policy.
